Abstract
The relationship between seed weight and a number of measurements of seedling vigour within six populations of Lolium Perenne, grown in two glasshouse environments, is investigated. In the initial stages of growth seed weight is highly and positively correlated with all the measures of vigour considered, but these correlations decrease as the plants become older. Although the relationship between seed weight and any one individual character may decrease, the long-term cumulative effect of seed weight is still considerable. The relationship between seed weight and some measurements of vigour may differ from population to population and from environment to environment.
