Abstract
The crystal structure of 1,1′-binaphthyl has been determined by X-ray analysis. The crystals are monoclinic space group C2/c, with a= 20·98, b= 6·35, c= 10·13 Å, β= 105·17°; Z= 4. The molecule exists in a cis-configuration with an angle of 68° between the planes of the two naphthalene residues, the dimensions of which are not significantly different from those of naphthalene itself. The sp2–sp2 single-bond between the two ring systems has a length of 1·475 ± 0·005 Å. The final R is 0·085 for 1315 observed reflections. Keywords
