Abstract
Dysphagia associated with cricopharyngeal achalasia and pharyngeal diverticulum appears in many cases to be secondary to hypertrophy and imperfect function of the cricopharyngeus muscle. Sutherland has recently suggested and carried out a posterior midline myotomy of the cricopharyngeus with strikingly beneficial improvement in dysphagia due to this cause. An example of cricopharyngeal achalasia, for which the Sutherland procedure has been carried out, is reported. Keywords
