DEVELOPMENT OF THE GRAAFIAN FOLLICLE AND OVULATION

Abstract
A review of the normal processes involved in the development and ovulation of a Graafian follicle with emphasis on the parts played by the pituitary and ovarian hormones. The developmental stages are: (1) self regulating up to antrum formation, (2) competence to respond to the pituitary during which time there is antrum formation, increased vascularity and mitotic activity, (3) differentiation with decreased mitotic activity, and (4) pre-ovulatory swelling. The rat and frog form the major basis for discussion.
