Abstract
A capacitive probe consisting of two plates ruled with vertical strips of varying width is described. It is shown that the device can be used to study the time dependence of individual Fourier components of surface waves on water. An account of tests on the selectivity and sensitivity of the probe is presented together with results indicating the utility of the probe under conditions which are normally adverse for other types of probe (i.e. the study of the growth of Rayleigh–Taylor instabilities on the surface of a fluid which is rapidly accelerated vertically.downward).Keywords
