Abstract
Acetic orcein squash preparations from femoral marrow have been analyzed in several N. American Sciuridae. The diploid number was 32 in Ammospermophilus h. harrisii and A. L. leucurus, 34 in Spermophilus richardsonii elegans and S. mexicanus parvidens, 38 in S. beecheyi douglasii, 42 in S. 1. lateralis, and 46 in Tamiasciurius hudsonicus fremontii. Karyograms demonstrated a large acrocentric Y chromosome in Ammospermophilus and Spermophilus and the X was submetacentric. The findings are discussed in relation to taxonomy of Sciuridae. The use of these species as cytogenetic models is discussed. Keywords
