Abstract
According to the author 4 types of shape determination occur in formation of cucurbit fruits: (a) differences in shape index (ratio of length to width), (b) constant differences in growth rate between length and width, (c) differences in shape index at maturity resulting from differences in size in cases where the relative-growth constant is other than 1, (d) differences in pattern. These 4 aspects are inherited independently of each other. The cells of comparable tissues are essentially the same in shape, the differences in shape of fruits being due to the relative numbers of cells along certain axes as compared to others. It is suggested that there is a genetic control of the planes of cell division.
