Abstract
Secured measures of responsiveness to social reinforcement from 50 familial and nonfamilial retardates both at 3 wk. and 3 yr. after their admission to an institution. Both initial responsiveness and changes in responsiveness to social reinforcement were related to the degree of certain aspects of the preinstitutional social deprivation experienced by the Ss. Findings indicate that preinstitutional social deprivation heightens social motivation, and that a retardate's reaction to institutionalization depends upon the character of his preinstitutional experiences. Differences between the findings of this and an earlier study suggest that different institutions have different effects upon their residents. (24 ref.)
