Abstract
A program of fertilization was begun in Algonquin Park in 1946 as part of an investigation of the factors controlling productivity in lakes. Four lakes have been fertilized and one other is used as a check. The response of phytoplankton and zooplankton populations to increased nutrients is indicated in this preliminary report. In each lake a marked increase in the net phytoplankton occurred in from 3 weeks to a month after the first application of fertilizer. Diatoms and flagellate protozoans showed the greatest increment. The rise in zooplankton organisms was relatively less than that of phytoplankton although the rotifer population did increase in all lakes. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
