THE ACTION OF CORTISONE ON OXIDATIVE AND GLYCOLYTIC LIVER ENZYME ACTIVITIES IN RATS OF DIFFERENT AGE AND SEX

Abstract
The activities of three mitochondrial respiratory enzymes were determined in the liver of 33 normal and 38 cortisone-treated rats of different age and sex. In addition, glucose-6-phosphate isomerase, aldolase, glycerophosphate kinase, and lactic dehydrogenase activities were determined in mitochondrial supernatants. The activity of cytochrome oxidase in mitochondria of cortisone-treated rats was decreased, especially in rats of more than one year of age. The diphos-phopyridine nucleotide-cytochrome c reductase activity was somewhat decreased in old cortisone-treated rats, the succinic dehydrogenase activity was unaltered in all groups. No cortisone-induced changes in the activities of the glycolytic enzymes were found.
