Abstract
Commonalities in the developmental patterns of both narcotic addiction and negative self-attitudes motivated this controlled study of 70 white, middle socioeconomic status (WMSES) addicts and 70 WMSES nonaddicts. Measures of self-attitudes would distinguish addicts from nonaddicts was confirmed with highly significant differences. That antecedent conditions resulting in positive self-attitudes would distinguish addicts from controls was also supported. Developmental conditions posited as indices of early self-attitudes further discriminated the 2 groups. A self-reported profile of the WMSES addict was compiled describing drug-use patterns and childhood situations.
