Abstract
A gas chromatographic method of analysis of benzoic acid and its paratertiary butyl homologue as found in certain alkyd resins is reported. The method is not restricted to resins containing fatty acids which are essentially unsaturated as are the spectrophotometric procedures. Both benzoic acid and its homologue, which may be estimated together as the retention times of their methyl esters, are well separated. Spectrophotometrically this analysis is not possible because of the similarity of the ultraviolet spectra.
