Laminar Flow Analysis of a Rotor in Hover

Abstract
A new, self‐contained procedure has been developed lo analyze the flowfield and performance of helicopter rotors. The steady, laminar Navier‐Stokes equations are solved in an axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate system. The spinning rotor is idealized as point momentum sources distributed along the span of the rotor with functional relationship to the local flow conditions. The method has been tested on several rotors in hover and the integrated performance, the rotor loads, and the wake correlation results compare very well with experimental data. In addition, overall flowfield characteristics are in agreement with the physics of the flow. Both the far wake and the near wake are captured by the solution procedure.
