Gas Chromatography of Epoxyglycerides

Abstract
Epoxyglycerides react with ketones in the presence of boron trifluoride to give 1,3-dioxolane derivatives. These derivatives are useful in the separation and identification of epoxyglycerides by gas liquid chromatography. Cyclopentanone is the most suitable reagent since it gives a derivative which has a large separation factor from the long-chain common triglycerides. The analysis of epoxyglyceride mixtures by GLC as their 1,3-dioxolane derivatives is described.
