Abstract
214 patients with chronic bronchitis were subjected to bronchial studies at Päivärinne Chest Hospital during the period 1967–1973. Bronchoscopy alone gave a frequency of 30 % for bronchiectases while the information from bronchography increased this figure to 44 %. In addition, 24 % of the patients showed bronchographic changes in the form of naked filling or mucus obstruction. Sputum specimens were less reliable indicators of infection than bronchial aspirates in patients with chronic bronchitis. Tracheobronchomalacia was found in 50 patients and greatly increased the gravity of the disease. Keywords
