A method for selecting breeding lines of brassicas with low levels of glucosinolates in the seed

Abstract
A method is described for detection of glucosinolates in Brassica seeds. It is based on controlled autolysis of the glucosinolates to produce glucose, which is separated by paper chromatography and revealed by a sensitive silver nitrate test. The method appears several times more sensitive than previously reported simple methods developed for the same purpose, is sufficiently specific, and is easily applicable to the requirements of a plant breeding programme.
