Abstract
The author reviews topographic maps published by Canadian federal and provincial government agencies in their role as research tools for the specialist in glaciological research. The demand for precise and systematic symbolization of ice features on topographic maps is emphasized by the current requirement to complete a World Inventory of Perennial Ice sponsored by the International Hydrological Decade (1965) The inadequacies of topographic maps in portraying ice features are detailed by the author, and certain recommendations for their improvement are discussed. It is suggested that orthophoto mapping would be wellsuited to delineate ice information, and that topographic maps should show the distribution of perennial snow and ice using a carefully selected symbolization, and be plotted from late-summer air photography. Keywords
