Abstract
ON April 2, 1977, Abdel Halim Hafez, the combination Elvis Presley-Frank Sinatra of the Arab world, was buried in Cairo amid the shrill cries and anguished chants of tens of thousands of his fans. One young woman leaped to her death from his balcony after paying her respects to his grieving family. Mr. Hafez was probably the most popular singer in the Arab world. He was known as the "Tan Nightingale" because his love songs and nationalistic songs about Egypt stirred the emotions of young and old alike.
