Abstract
Comparisons of the gross and histologlcal morphology, chemical tests of the secretions and experiments with live animals show that the groove and its associated structures facilitate the drainage of water from the nares. This special apparatus compensates for the absence of lungs and the breathing mechanism which aid other salamanders in keeping the nasal passages free of water. Nasal blockage is a serious deterrant to olfaction. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
