Abstract
The green berries of Diospyros mollis (maklua) crushed in coconut milk and administered immediately after preparation, were effective in treating human hookworm infection. Of 79 patients 52 became negative for hookworm eggs after a single administration of this berry and in the others there was marked reduction in egg counts. Results were better than those obtained by treating 23 controls with hexylresorcinol. Toxic symptoms were nausea, vomiting and diarrhea in a few patients. Although the hookworms from the feces of treated persons were not recovered, low egg counts 90 days after treatment suggested a worm elimination rather than a temporary sterilization. Unless the green berries were used for treatment very soon after being collected, their effectiveness was markedly reduced. Keywords
