Abstract
The use of antibiotics to prevent infection during surgery is controversial. Dr. Burke has performed important animal studies that provide a solid basis for the use of preventive antibiotics. Here he points out the situations in which such use will be beneficial and stresses not only the benefits but the problems that preventive antibiotics may introduce.—HCNKeywords
