Optically time-division-multiplexed solitons are transmitted at 40 Gbit/s over 65 km of dispersion-shifted singlemode fibre with an optical demultiplexer driven by an electrical timing recovery circuit and a 10 Gbit/s optical receiver for the first time. No error rate floor was observed, and the measured receiver penalty of 1 dB is mostly attributed to the noise accumulation of the Er-doped fibre amplifiers.
