Abstract
Four mutants of the "obligate" autotroph, T. thiooxidans. requiring exogenous organic compounds for growth, were obtained by u.-v. irradiation procedures. Three of the mutants reverted to the parent type within 3 serial sub-cultures. The 4th persisted in its need for organic compounds through 20 serial subcultures before reversion. The exact compound(s) needed was not conclusively established, but the data indicated that a member (or members) of the B vitamin group was involved. The fact that mutants requiring exogenous organic compounds were obtained from an obligate autotrophic bacterium illustrates the close relationship between autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms and further strengthens the concept of the basic unity of the metabolic processes in diverse forms of life. Keywords
