Abstract
This paper is the first of two concerned with the selection of computer numerically controlled (CNC) turning and machining centres by use of a systems approach. The work is based on collaborative research carried out by Simon Container Machinery and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. The first paper describes how computer-assisted modelling was developed in order to identify ‘key’ machined components from a sales forecast for a defined product mix. The second paper discusses how data derived from these components were used to formulate the specifications and make the final selection on a number of CNC machine tools. Keywords
