Abstract
Lygosoma fragile Macleay 1877, originally described from Hall Sound, New Guinea and long unidentifiable in the New Guinea fauna, is in fact a valid species referable to the genus Sphenomorphus. It is very common in the Port Moresby area where it has generally been referred to as S. crassicaudus. The species is redescribed and diagnosed, and the general features of its distribution, behaviour, ecology, reproduction and skull osteology are described.
