Abstract
The historical development of rheumatology as a specialty within the field of general medicine is reviewed. Its place in undergraduate education is considered. The need for the development of facilities for post-graduate education is stressed. The relationship between rheumatology and physical medicine is discussed. It is concluded that rheumatology is now a well defined specialty within the field of general medicine requiring a high degree of skill and experience, leaving no time for undertaking additional responsibilities in the more general field of medical rehabilitation. Keywords
