Abstract
Because of their higher rate of chronic illness and disability, the aged have a greater need than younger persons for institutional care. However, facilities and care are often inadequate and alternatives to institutionalization may be feasible in many cases. Treating the total patient as opposed to isolated symptoms is especially important in geriatric care. It requires that the physician play a truly supportive role, carefully balancing the benefits of treatment against the cost in discomfort, as well as in money and time. Keywords
