Reef—Zone Disaster Caused by Bore-Like Surf Beat

Abstract
Maritime structures in coral reef zones of the Okinawa Islands have frequently been damaged by typhoon attacks. It is suggested that this damage has not been caused by typhoon surges as estimated by conventional theory, but by ‘bore-like (or tsunami-like) surf beat’ resonantly excited in the coastal zone by groups of incident short period waves. Several field surveys, numerical studies and laboratory experiments have confirmed the phenomena of the bore-like surf beat on a coral reef.
