Piezoelectric composites for underwater transducers

Abstract
This paper discusses the use of composite structures to improve the hydrostatic performance of piezoelectric ceramics in which other phases such as epoxy resins and glass fibres are used to control the stresses acting upon the ceramic. Structures are described in which the hydrostatic piezoelectric figure-of-merit is improved relative to that of the single-phase material by a factor of more than 60. The use of these structures in practical hydrophones and their frequency performance are also discussed.
