Abstract
The efficacy of gelatin for the recovery of N. meningitidis from blood cultures was evaluated in a clinical setting. The organism was isolated from 7 patients with meningococcal infections in blood culture media containing 1% gelatin. In contrast, only 2 blood cultures from these patients were positive in media without gelatin (P < 0.05). Gelatin did not influence the recovery of other organisms isolated during this study. Conventional blood culture media may be supplemented with gelatin when meningococcemia is suspected. This publication has 7 references indexed in Scilit:
