Abstract
A new technique is described for calculation of the scattering of charged particles by atoms. This is done by means of an expansion in "incoherent fluctuations" of the state of the atom. Two limiting cases are discussed—the adiabatic and the high-energy limits. The structure and convergence of the expansion are investigated. Several variational techniques may be used within the framework of the method described. Finally, a detailed study is made of scattering by hydrogen atoms. Keywords
