The Role of Silences and Elements in the Recognition of a Dialect in the Corn Bunting

Abstract
This study concerns the mechanisms of dialectal recognition in the corn bunting, Emberiza calandra. Thanks to a microprocessor which guided a synthetizer, we synthetically reproduced one of the 3 natural songs of the Claville dialect. After having tested this synthetic song on the birds of this locality, we modified, in succession, its different physical parameters. The results obtained show that the recognition of this dialect depends on both the temporal distribution of silences and on that of elements. Dialectal recognition, like specific recognition, therefore implies the association of several parameters.
