Biofiltration in Uremia: Preliminary Observations

Abstract
Biofiltration (BF) is an ultrashort hemodiafiltration (3 h/session) with 3 liters of substitution fluid (Na+: 145 mEq/1, HCO-3: 100 mEq/1) and a new polyacrylonitrile membrane (AN 69 S). Five clinically stable patients on conventional hemodialysis (CH) were switched to BF and were followed-up for 6 months. Before and at the end of this period, the clinical and biochemical data as well as the acid-base and nutritional status were assessed. Plasma levels of small molecules, potassium and phosphate remained unchanged despite a 1 -hour reduction in the treatment time. During BF, the prevalence of symptomatic hypotension was less than during CH, and there was an improvement in metabolic acidosis and in the nutritional status.BF has the advantage of reducing the treatment time and of keeping most patients in good condition.
