Cutaneous Meningioma (Psammoma)

Abstract
Cutaneous meningioma is a rare benign tumor first described by Winkler, in 1904.1Six additional cases have since been reported.2-5Microscopically, cutaneous meningiomas are identical in structure with the common intracranial meningioma or psammoma. The lesion originates in the skin or subcutis, unconnected with intramedullary portions of the nervous system or its membranes. Confirmation of autochthonous origin of the lesion in a given case requires the demonstration that there is no intracranial tumor or any cranial defect with meningeal protrusion to which the origin of the tumor could be ascribed. Intracranial meningiomas eroding the skull and meningiomas located within deeper layers of the scalp unrelated to skin are thus excluded.
