Motivational determinants of small-group structure.

Abstract
Reports an investigation of individual motivation as a determinant of group structure. 50 male undergraduates high on either safety or esteem needs were homogeneously formed into 10 5-S groups. All groups were given a standardized set of tasks, and Ss' task-oriented behaviors were coded using Borgatta's interaction process scores. As predicted, safety groups tended to establish a more hierarchical social structure, in that task-oriented behaviors consistently were concentrated in fewer Ss in safety groups than in esteem groups. It is concluded that groups tend to organize themselves in ways that are compatible with the motivations of their members. (18 ref.) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
