AUREOMYCIN-RESISTANT CELL-FREE NITRO REDUCTASE FROM AUREOMYCIN-RESISTANT ESCHERICHIA COLI

Abstract
A cell-free nitro reductase was extracted from an Aureomycin-resistant strain of E. coli derived from an Aureomycin-sensitive strain. This nitro reductase is resistant to the action of the antibiotic, whereas the enzyme complex from the sensitive strain is strongly inhibited. Antibiotically inactive Aureomycin degradation products which inhibit the sensitive enzyme also inhibit the resistant enzyme. The resistance may reflect the synthesis of an altered enzyme. The relationship of these findings to the mode of action of the antibiotic is discussed.
