Abstract

An observation of an excited

Λ_{c}^{+ *}

baryon decaying to

Λ_{c}^{+}

π^{+}

π^{-}

, with

Λ_{c}^{+}

→

{pK}^{-}

π^{+}

, is presented. We reconstruct 39.7±8.7

Λ_{c}^{+ *}

baryons with a mass of 340.4±0.6±0.3 MeV/

c^{2}

above the

Λ_{c}^{+}

mass. The upper limit on the resonant branching ratio is B(

Λ_{c}^{+ *}

→

Σ_{c}

π^{\pm}

)/B(

Λ_{c}^{+ *}

→

Λ_{c}^{+}

π^{+}

π^{-}

)<36% at the 90% confidence level.
