Abstract
19 patients with cancer of the prostate gland were treated with progesterone (25-500 mg. per day intramusc.) or with anhydro-hydroxy-progesterone (25-100 mg. per day by mouth). Varying degrees of improvement were observed in a majority of patients who had elevated serum acid phosphatase levels. No improvement was observed in those with normal acid phosphatase levels. Injd. progesterone was not well tolerated over long periods of time, although 2 patients were treated daily for 10 and 6 months respectively. Of greatest interest was the observation that each of the agents used possessed ability not only to bring about improvement, but at higher doses to stimulate the growth of the prostatic cancer. Keywords
