Abstract
From myth to legend. The birth of speech in the village of the Bianacas. The Leggenda del Jurupary, published at the end of the 19th century by Ermanno Stradelli, addresses, in a mythic form used here as a mere literary device, the problem of the birth and the status of speech. At the same time it breaks away from mythical tradition, which is premised on a non-questioning of its origins. Out of the ruins of the « savage mind », a new form of discourse is thus created, which can be considered, according to Stradelli, as legendary. Its main characteristics are that it implies a historical perspective and is expressed in legislative terms, as distinct from mythical metaphors. The Leggenda is an expression of the high degree of civilisation attained by the Rio Negro and Middle Amazon societies ; the small tribes of northwest Amazonia, studied by anthropologists today, thus represent a primitive form of that ancient Amazonian culture.
