Abstract
In counseling situations of a non-directive character, insight (new perceptions and understandings of self) develops in a spontaneous fashion. It follows free expression of negative emotion. It is likely to develop if the counselor uses responses which are accepting and clarifying. Procedures which make defensiveness on the part of the client completely unnecessary, but which make the client feel that he is deeply understood, are most successful.
