Abstract
The edible fungus Suillus granulatus (Fries) O. Kuntze, an introduced species found only in pine plantations, has hitherto been avoided by mycophagists in Zambia, in line with a traditional suspicion of all boletes. The results of a palatability survey, to investigate the acceptability of S. granulatus to members of the Forest Department around the Copperbelt Province, are reported and discussed, and show it to have considerable potential as a new food resource for Zambia, with possibilities for greater utilisation and exploitation. The study also provides a general perspective on current mushroom-eating habits, and is relevant to problems in promoting the consumption of other neglected mushrooms. Keywords
