Abstract
Studies of phoneme duration are reviewed for the purpose of explaining possible mechanisms to account for observed differential durational effects. Information relative to the chronologic appearance of these mechanisms in children is presented showing a developmental sequence and suggesting the possible interrelationship of mechanisms. Findings are related to the model of speech production proposed by MacNeilage and DeClerk. Keywords
