Abstract
It is known that noradrenaline has a profound effect on myocardial contractility, but no satisfactory explanation of this process at a cellular level has been available previously. In this paper evidence is presented that noradrenaline increases the rate of uptake of calcium by the sarcoplasmic reticulum. The experimental findings correlate well with the effects of noradrenaline on cardiac contraction, and a hypothesis is suggested which explains the positive inotropic effect of the drug. Keywords
