Abstract
The statement by Widal, Abrami and Iancovesco,1in 1920, that leukopenia following a standard protein meal is to be regarded as a delicate test for the presence of hepatic insufficiency suggested the advisability of studying a series of postalimentary leukocyte curves in normal persons. As the original article by Widal and his co-workers reported only eleven control experiments, it seemed wise to try the test further on a larger group of healthy men. Widal's test appears to rest on a sound experimental basis. It is known that the injection of a certain quantity of commercial peptone into the general circulation of a dog will promptly result in a crise hémoclasique. This syndrome is an evidence of upset of the colloidal balance of the blood, and is characterized clinically by leukopenia, a fall of blood pressure, hypercoagulability, and a change in the refractive index of the serum.
