METHYL HYDANTOIN (MESANTOIN) IN THE TREATMENT OF EPILEPSY*

Abstract
The anticonvulsant drug, 3-methyl-5,5-phenylethylhydantoin (mesantoin, or methyl hydantoin) was tried for periods as long as 8 mos. in the treatment of 20 patients with epilepsy. The avg. dose was 0.1 gm. 3 times daily. In 11 patients with grand mal, mesantoin was more effective than previously used drugs in 7 cases. The number of petit mal attacks was decreased in each of the 16 patients suffering from this condition. Untoward effects consisted of a dermatitis in 3 cases, gastritis in 1, toxic psychosis in 1, and stimulatory effects (elation, insomnia, etc.) in 10 cases. Prowsiness, gum hyperplasia, or depression of the white count was not encountered.
