Abstract
SUMMARY Postpartum female rats of the Wistar strain carrying long-term functioning heart allografts were studied (1) serologically, (2) by skin grafting, (3) in spleen cell graftversus-host (GVH) assays, (4) by parabiosis, (5) in adoptive transfer, and (6) by passive serum transfer experiments. It was concluded that recipients carrying well accepted hearts were by no means immunologically tolerant but fulfill the requirements for having developed immunological enhancement. It was also shown that the initial state of passive enhancement in a rat was replaced by the active production of enhancing serum components
