Abnormal Autonomic Response to Tilting in Postgastrectomy Patients with Dumping Syndrome

Abstract
Patients with the dumping syndrome following subtotal gastrectomy show an abnormal autonomic response to the stress of tilting. Their reaction is typified by a subnormal activity of the sympathetic nervous system and, in many instances, an excessive parasympathetic response. The symptomatic response that results from tilting is similar to that noted in the dumping syndrome and suggests similar etiologic factors. In a majority of patients given sympathomimetic drug therapy an improvement has been observed.
