Abstract
The paper presents a theoretical and experimental investigation of the heat transfer to a liquid film flowing over a horizontal cylinder. The solution for the film thickness and heat transfer rate was obtained by a Karman-Pohlhausen analysis and by a local similarity technique. In the experimental part the film thickness of water flowing over a 38mm tube at Re=100−700 was measured by a capacitance gage, and heat transfer coefficients were measured for parameter values relevant to water desalination equipment. The results of the laminar theory are in good agreement with experiments up to Re≅600. It is shown that at low Reynolds numbers the liquid reaches the wall temperature before it leaves the tube. Keywords
