Abstract
Although radar screens are frequently covered with bird echoes during migration periods, estimating bird densities from the displayed echoes is difficult. Weather radars have attenuation circuits that are used to measure the intensity of rain storms, and these devices can be employed to determine the number of migrating birds aloft at night and during the day. The types of birds responsible for the echoes can be identified by simultaneous telescopic observations, and these observations can also be used to calibrate the radar displays. Keywords
