Abstract
Investigated optional intradimensional (ID) and extradimensional (ED) shift behavior in 30 preschool and 20 2nd grade children. There was an overall tendency for Ss to make optional ID, rather than ED, shifts, with this tendency being independent of age. Very few Ss responded inconsistently on the test series. Results are discussed in terms of mediational and attentional theories of discriminative learning and are contrasted with results obtained in developmental studies of optional reversal (R) and ED shift behavior, where it has been found that the probability of an S's executing an optional R shift increases with age. A number of ways of reconciling the different trends are also discussed. (16 ref.) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
